Douglas L. Toering

Before joining Mantese Honigman PC, Douglas L. Toering practiced as in-house counsel for General Motors Corporation, later as a partner at a national litigation firm, and then as a principal at his own firm.  His practice includes commercial litigation, shareholder disputes, insurance litigation, and business mediation. Over a 30 year career, Mr. Toering has represented Fortune 500 companies in commercial litigation as well as small businesses in litigation and transactional matters.

Mr. Toering chairs the State Bar of Michigan’s Business Law Section, where he also chairs the Business Courts Committee and the Commercial Litigation Committee. In October 2012, Mr. Toering was one of three private practice attorneys to attend Governor Rick Snyder’s signing of the business court legislation.

Mr. Toering has presented on business courts to the Business Law Section, Michigan’s Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.  In addition, Mr. Toering has authored articles on business courts for the ABA's Business Law Today, the National Judicial College, Michigan Bar Journal, and Michigan Business Law Journal.  Since 2012, Mr. Toering authored the chapter on Michigan’s business courts for the American Bar Association’s Annual Review of Recent Developments in Business and Corporate Litigation.  On November 12, 2015, Mr. Toering moderated a program on business courts and early alternative dispute resolution techniques.  Seven business court judges and three private practice attorneys (including Mr. Toering) presented.

In October 2013, Gerard Mantese and Doug Toering presented on shareholder litigation at a seminar on business courts sponsored by the Michigan Judicial Institute and the National Judicial College.  Mr. Toering also served on the committee that drafted the Business Law Section's amicus brief to the Michigan Supreme Court in Madugula v Taub. That case has far-reaching implications for shareholder oppression litigation.

A strong believer in alternative dispute resolution, Mr. Toering recently co-authored Business Courts, Arbitration, and Pre-Suit Mediation:  A Modest Proposal for the Strategic Resolution of Business Disputes.  That article, co-authored by retired Macomb County Business Court Judge John C. Foster and Richard L. Hurford, appears in the fall 2015 issue of the Michigan Business Law Journal.

Mr. Toering was selected as one of thirty Leaders in the Law for 2016 by the Michigan Lawyers Weekly.  He is listed in Super Lawyers and 2016 Top Lawyers in Metro Detroit by dBusiness magazine.  He is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell.
